Two specifications decide how a metal roof ages, and neither of them usually appears on an estimate.
Gauge is panel thickness, and the numbering runs backwards
24-gauge steel is thicker than 26-gauge, and 26-gauge is thicker than 29-gauge. Thicker panels are more resistant to denting and tend to stay flatter across long runs. Thicker is not automatically the right choice: True Metal Supply recommends 26-gauge for residential projects, and for most homes in this area that is what we specify. Panel system, roof geometry, run length and exposure all factor into the decision, which is why the gauge belongs in the written scope rather than being assumed.
Coating decides how long the color lasts
A PVDF finish, often sold under the Kynar 500 name, generally holds color longer than a standard polyester finish, and the difference tends to show first on south-facing slopes. If a quote does not state which finish is included, it is worth asking before the panels are ordered.
Oil canning, and what it does and does not mean
Oil canning is the faint waviness sometimes visible across a flat metal panel in low, raking light. It has several possible causes. Metal expands and contracts, so a panel restrained too tightly or fastened without allowance for that movement can show it. It can also originate in stresses within the steel coil itself, in the roll-forming process, or in an uneven roof deck beneath the panels.
In many cases it is a cosmetic characteristic of flat metal rather than a fault. It can also point to a material or installation problem, so it is worth having looked at rather than assumed either way. We allow for thermal movement in how panels are fastened, and we do not over-drive screws on exposed-fastener systems.
