MI Homesiding & Roofing
Stain spreading on a ceiling? Gutter running over at the same corner every storm? Metal roof on the shortlist and no straight answer about it?
Roofing, gutters, siding and the rest of the exterior across Hardin Valley and west Knox County.
By far the most common thing homeowners here search for is a roof leak, and it is also the one most often chased in the wrong place.
Water does not fall straight down once it is inside a roof. It lands on the top of the deck, runs along a rafter until something stops it, and shows up on the ceiling somewhere else entirely — often several feet from where it got in. Which is why a stain above the kitchen is not evidence of a hole above the kitchen.
The places it usually gets in are the joins rather than the field of the roof: a valley, a chimney, a pipe boot gone hard and split, a skylight kerb, or a roof-to-wall transition with no kick-out flashing to throw the water out over the gutter. Those are details, not materials, which is why a leak on a roof with plenty of life left in it is normal rather than surprising.
So the first job is finding it, not quoting it. More on how that is done on our roof leak detection and repair page.

Mel was so easy to work with. We had him out because we needed to figure out how to fix a roof leak where the flashing wasn't done right (and part of the siding was also not right). He did a thorough inspection and explained to me what issues he saw. His quote was similar to the other we got. We ended up having him put on a new roof, with a new under shingle ventilation system and a roof vent. He also corrected siding issues (and flashing), fixed some rotten trim, and repainted part of the siding and trim. Everything looks great! His crews were very nice. Of all the contractors we've worked with on various renovations, Mel was easily one of the best at quickly responding when we had a question or saw an issue we wanted handled differently. We'll definitely hire him again if we need roof or siding work!Posted on Google![]()

Mel and his team were extremely thorough in identifying and correcting a water leakage problem from the top of our deck into the enclosed sun room below. They were both professional and courteous and provided great follow up after the job was completed. I highly recommend MI Homesiding & Roofing for any problem that involves water leakage into your home. I will definitely use MI in the future.Posted on Google![]()

Highly recommend MI Homesiding! They completed a major home exterior project for us including replacing and painting our siding as well as replacing our roofing and gutters. They did an excellent job and we began getting compliments immediately from our neighbors about it! Mel was very communicative and proactive, listened to our questions and ideas, and took care of things in a timely manner. His team was always professional and the work is just superb! We not only recommend MI Homesiding, we will be using them again for future projects ourselves.Posted on Google![]()

I found MI Homesiding & Roofing through their YouTube channel and called with a few questions about siding. Even though I’m not located in Tennessee and wouldn’t be hiring them directly, they answered the phone right away and took the time to answer every question in detail. They provided specific, helpful information and even assisted me in finding a contractor in my area. It’s rare to find a company so willing to help someone who isn’t even a local customer. Awesome people, excellent service, and truly knowledgeable. Thank you so much!Posted on Google![]()

Our Own Warranty on the Work
Five years on a complete replacement and one year on a repair, covering how it was installed — our labor and our details.
Roofing is what Hardin Valley asks about most, and it splits into a few quite different jobs.
Tracing where water is actually entering before anybody prices a repair, because the entry point and the stain are rarely in the same place. See leak detection and repair.
A sound roof with a failed detail gets the detail fixed. A roof that has been patched repeatedly, or has lost its granules across the field, is a different conversation. See roof repair.
Asphalt is still the default and we install it; metal is the other half of what people here ask for, covered below. Low-slope sections need their own system.
Attic ventilation sits underneath all of it. Knox County builds to the 2018 International Residential Code, and its attic ventilation section is adopted without local amendment, so the intake at the eave and the exhaust at the ridge have to be balanced. A roof with blocked intake cooks its own shingles from below. More on our roof ventilation page, and the whole system on the Knoxville roofing page.
Metal comes up more in Hardin Valley searches than almost anywhere else we work, and most of the confusion is that “metal roof” describes two quite different products.
Neither is simply better. What decides it is the pitch, how long the runs are, whether the roof has a lot of penetrations to flash around, and how long you intend to own the house. We install both and will tell you which one your roof suits — see metal roofing.
We do not publish a service-life figure for either. The number that matters is the one your roof reaches, and that depends on the installation and the ventilation as much as the metal.
The second thing Hardin Valley searches for is gutters — installation, replacement and seamless runs.
A gutter that runs over is usually a capacity problem rather than a blocked one: too much roof draining into a single run, or too few outlets for the water arriving. Cleaning will not change that and neither will a guard. We measure the roof area feeding each run before deciding between five inch and six inch, rather than quoting the wider trough to everybody.
Seamless means the straight run between corners is one continuous piece, rolled to length on your driveway rather than lapped every ten feet. How that works, and what a guard will and will not do.
Seamless gutter and downspout are $15.25 per linear foot, with each elbow counted as a foot. Where the ground will not take the water, the discharge has to be carried further out — see downspouts and drainage.

Siding installation is the single most searched phrase in Hardin Valley after the roofing terms, and the questions are nearly always about material.
James Hardie fiber cement handles sustained damp better than anything else we hang and is the usual answer on a wall that dries slowly. LP SmartSide engineered wood is lighter, easier on framing, and carries LP’s 5/50 limited warranty. Vinyl remains the least expensive to install and the simplest to replace in sections.
What matters more than the product is what goes behind it: the weather-resistive barrier, and whether it was integrated with the flashing at every window and transition. Water that gets behind siding does not announce itself — it shows up years later as soft sheathing. The full picture is on our Knoxville siding page.
Soffit and fascia come up here too, and they are where roofing and gutters meet. The gutter hangs on the fascia, so a board that has gone soft stops holding the hangers; and the soffit is usually where the attic draws its air in, which ties straight back to the ventilation above. See soffit and fascia repair.
Beyond that we build and repair decks, install and replace windows, and handle exterior painting. Those are the trades we actually do; if a job needs something outside them we will say so rather than take it on.
Hardin Valley is unincorporated Knox County, so there is no town office in the middle of it. Anything that does need a permit goes through Knox County Codes Administration rather than a municipal department.
Knox County builds to the 2018 International Residential Code. Its attic ventilation requirements are adopted without local amendment, which is the part that most often matters on a re-roof: intake at the eave and exhaust at the ridge have to be balanced, and a soffit stuffed with insulation defeats both.
Replacing a roof, gutters or siding on an existing house is often maintenance rather than permitted work. Where a job turns structural — rafter tails, decking, framing behind the cladding — it can be a different matter. We confirm what your address requires before the proposal goes out rather than guessing on your behalf.
On-site estimates are free for standard work. The $350 Technical Assessment applies to complex inspections — active leaks, previous repair work, or conditions we cannot verify from the ground — and is credited back in full if you move forward.
Exterior work rarely arrives one trade at a time. A roof that needs replacing usually turns up alongside gutters that were never sized for it. Financing runs through our lending partner so the whole job gets done properly rather than split across two years.
Applications are reviewed by the lender. Approval, terms, and rates are set by them, not by us.
Real MI projects from across our East Tennessee service area. The photographs are of our own work, and we do not label a photo with a town unless we can verify where it was taken.

Where the roof, the fascia and the gutter all meet, and where most of the problems on an exterior start.

The old boards come off before anything goes on, because what is behind them decides the real scope.

Vented soffit feeding the attic, fascia carrying the gutter, and the outlet placed where the water actually arrives.
Almost certainly not directly above the stain. Water lands on top of the deck and runs along a rafter until something stops it, so it shows up some distance from where it got in. The usual entry points are the joins rather than the field of the roof: a valley, a chimney, a split pipe boot, a skylight kerb, or a roof-to-wall transition missing its kick-out flashing. Finding it comes before pricing it.
It depends which metal roof. Standing seam hides its fasteners in the seam, so there are no screw penetrations through the flat of the panel; through-fastened ribbed panel screws through the face, costs less, and makes the fasteners a maintenance item. The pitch, the run lengths, the number of penetrations and how long you plan to own the house decide which one suits. We install both.
Seamless gutter and downspout are $15.25 per linear foot, with each elbow counted as a foot. The total comes from the linear feet measured around your roofline and the number of downspouts the roof needs. Leaf protection, repairs, fascia replacement and cleaning are quoted separately because they depend on what we find.
That is capacity rather than blockage: too much roof draining into one run, or too few outlets for the water arriving. Cleaning will not change it and neither will a guard. The answer is in the outlet count or the trough size, which is why the contributing roof area gets measured first.

Yes. Siding, roofing, gutters, soffit and fascia, decks, windows and exterior painting are all our own trades. On a lot of houses they are the same job anyway: a gutter that has been overflowing behind itself has usually been soaking the fascia, and sometimes the wall below it, for years.
Our workmanship warranty covers how the job was installed. It runs one year on a repair and five years on a complete replacement. The material carries its own manufacturer coverage, which is separate from our labor, and on qualifying GAF roofing systems we are authorized to offer the GAF System Plus Limited Warranty subject to GAF eligibility and terms.
We work across Hardin Valley and the rest of west Knox County, and in the communities around it: Farragut, Powell and Halls Crossroads, with the full range of exterior work across Knoxville and East Tennessee.
For the detail on any one trade, our Knoxville pages go considerably deeper than this one: roofing, gutters, siding, soffit and fascia, decks and windows.
If there is a stain spreading on a ceiling, a gutter going over in every storm, or a wall you are no longer sure about, we will come and look and tell you plainly what it needs. On-site estimates are free for standard work.
