MI Homesiding & Roofing
If your home shows signs of moisture damage, rotting wood, loose siding, or recurring leaks, the visible damage may only be part of the problem. Water can move behind the siding and affect trim, sheathing, flashing, and other wall components before the full extent of the damage is visible.
James Hardie fiber cement can be a strong long-term option when the existing siding system needs more than a cosmetic repair. But the material alone does not solve moisture problems. Proper wall preparation, weather-resistant barriers, flashing, clearances, fastening, and moisture management are what help protect the wall system long term.
MI Homesiding & Roofing is a James Hardie™ ALLIANCE Affiliate, Tennessee Licensed Home Improvement Contractor, and insured exterior contractor with more than 20 years of hands-on remodeling experience.

Mel was so easy to work with. We had him out because we needed to figure out how to fix a roof leak where the flashing wasn't done right (and part of the siding was also not right). He did a thorough inspection and explained to me what issues he saw. His quote was similar to the other we got. We ended up having him put on a new roof, with a new under shingle ventilation system and a roof vent. He also corrected siding issues (and flashing), fixed some rotten trim, and repainted part of the siding and trim. Everything looks great! His crews were very nice. Of all the contractors we've worked with on various renovations, Mel was easily one of the best at quickly responding when we had a question or saw an issue we wanted handled differently. We'll definitely hire him again if we need roof or siding work!Posted on Google![]()

I found MI Homesiding & Roofing through their YouTube channel and called with a few questions about siding. Even though I’m not located in Tennessee and wouldn’t be hiring them directly, they answered the phone right away and took the time to answer every question in detail. They provided specific, helpful information and even assisted me in finding a contractor in my area. It’s rare to find a company so willing to help someone who isn’t even a local customer. Awesome people, excellent service, and truly knowledgeable. Thank you so much!Posted on Google![]()

Homes in Knoxville deal with constant humidity, wet seasons, and temperature swings that wear down weaker exterior materials. That's why many homeowners choose James Hardie for long-term performance, not just appearance.
Fiber cement is designed to resist moisture-related damage better than many traditional wood siding products, which can help reduce problems such as swelling, rot, and frequent repainting when the system is properly installed and maintained. If you’re still comparing options, our guide to best siding for Tennessee climate can help you decide where Hardie fits best.

Fiber cement siding is made from cement, sand, and cellulose fibers — a stable, durable board that performs well in rain, humidity, and wind without acting like wood.
For Knoxville homes, that matters because many siding failures start when moisture keeps reaching weak materials year after year. James Hardie is one of the best-known fiber cement brands. James Hardie states that fiber cement resists damage from moisture and holds no appeal for pests such as woodpeckers or termites, and the material itself is non-combustible. See our vinyl vs Hardie siding guide for a closer comparison.
Most siding problems we see are not caused by bad material. They are caused by poor installation details that let water get behind the wall or allow the system to move, crack, and fail over time. James Hardie can still have problems if the fastening pattern is wrong, flashing is missing, clearances are too tight, or joints are handled poorly.
A house can have premium siding on the outside and still take on hidden damage because the details underneath were done wrong. That is why we treat installation as seriously as the product itself on every Hardie project.
When those details are skipped, many homeowners later need improper siding installation repair before the home can be protected correctly again.

The biggest problems come from a few repeated shortcuts: improper fastening, missing flashing at windows and joints, and sloppy cuts that leave weak points open to moisture.
These issues may not show up right away — some homeowners think the job was done right until the first few storm seasons expose it. When skipped, moisture spreads into trim and sheathing, often leading to water behind siding repair.
📋 Hidden Damage Policy: If structural rot or hidden wall damage is discovered during the project, a Change Order (CO) will be issued so the home is repaired safely and correctly. Problems behind the wall are documented and addressed in writing before new siding goes on.
Cracking has more than one cause, and the honest answer is that you cannot tell which one you are looking at from a photo. It is worth separating what James Hardie documents from what we see in the field.
What James Hardie documents. Its warranty excludes damage attributable to improper storage, shipping, handling or installation of the product, including failure to install it in compliance with the applicable published James Hardie installation instructions and building codes. Separately, James Hardie technical bulletin USTB 17 describes "pin backs" as a corrective measure for high nailing, loose planks, gaps or rattling, which tells you those fastening conditions are real and recognized.
What we observe on Knoxville homes. When cracks appear near fastener lines or at butt joints, it is worth checking the fastening, the support behind the board and the moisture conditions around it before deciding anything. That is our field experience, not a manufacturer statement.
What we will not tell you is that every crack is an installation failure. Impact happens, houses move, and some cracks have nothing to do with how the siding went on. The point of looking is to find out which kind you have, because a cosmetic crack and a crack over a wet wall need different work.
James Hardie offers several design options without losing the durability of fiber cement.
HardiePlank® lap siding is the horizontal product and the most common choice, giving the clean, classic lap look.
HardiePanel® vertical siding is a large sheet product run vertically. This is the one homeowners usually mean when they ask about board and batten, and it is worth being clear about: board and batten is not a separate Hardie material. It is a look, created by installing HardiePanel and then adding battens over the panel joints at regular spacing, typically HardieTrim boards.
HardieShingle® siding gives the look of cedar shake without the refinishing cycle real wood needs. HardieTrim® boards finish windows, doors, corners and bands, and are also what form the battens on a board-and-batten wall.
These products can be mixed to create a custom exterior that performs as one system. For older wood exteriors, we also handle cedar to Hardie siding conversion, or compare options in our best siding for Tennessee's climate guide.
Hardie products reach your home one of two ways. ColorPlus Technology is a factory-applied, baked-on finish, delivered in the color you chose. The alternative is primed product, which is painted on site after installation.
The difference matters for more than appearance. James Hardie warrants the ColorPlus finish separately from the board itself: a 15-year limited finish warranty that the finish will not peel, crack or chip. It is not a flat 15 years of full coverage. Under the current warranty, the payment is reduced by 6.67% per year from the second year onward, so coverage declines across the term, and it runs to the original purchaser, the first owner of the home and one transferee.
Two practical points homeowners should know. A claim requires written notice to James Hardie within 90 days of discovering the problem and before any permanent repair is made, so do not have a finish problem patched before it is documented. And installation that does not comply with James Hardie's published instructions can affect coverage, which is the manufacturer's own reason for caring how the siding goes on.
If you choose primed product to be painted on site, or you are repainting an older Hardie exterior later, that is painting work rather than a factory finish. We maintain a Sherwin-Williams PRO+ professional contractor account for that side of the job. Sherwin-Williams does not certify Hardie installation, and the ColorPlus finish warranty applies to the factory finish, not to field paint.

These are the two products homeowners most often weigh against each other here, and they are genuinely different systems rather than two versions of the same thing. We install both, so here is the comparison without a verdict attached.
What they are made of. Hardie is fiber cement: cement, sand and cellulose fibers, and non-combustible. LP SmartSide is treated engineered wood, manufactured with LP's SmartGuard process for resistance to fungal decay and termites.
Finishing obligations. Hardie comes either factory-finished with ColorPlus or primed for field paint. LP is more demanding at the point of installation: LP documents that every cut end and exposed edge has to be primed and painted, and that primed product is finished within the window set out in its current application instructions.
Warranty structure. James Hardie covers its fiber cement products with a 30-year limited, non-prorated warranty, with the ColorPlus finish warranted separately for 15 years. LP backs SmartSide with a 5/50 limited warranty: five years at 100% of labor and material, then prorated substrate coverage for the balance of 50 years. Those are warranty terms, not predictions of how long a wall will last.
Weather and handling. LP publishes coverage for hail impact up to 1.75 in. in diameter. Hardie is heavier and more brittle at the edges, so it is cut rather than snapped and generates dust that has to be controlled. LP is lighter to work with, which can matter on older framing.
Neither one is the right answer for every house. Full detail on the engineered wood option is on our LP SmartSide siding page, and if vinyl is also on your list, compare it on our vinyl siding installation page.

We start by looking at the real condition of the walls, not just the surface. Then we provide a clear estimate and inspect for hidden damage before new siding goes on.
From there, we install house wrap, flashing, and Hardie boards with the exact fastening pattern and clearances the system requires — we don't treat it like generic siding.
If deeper damage is found, we explain it before moving forward, just like we do on homes needing rotted siding repair.
Fastening is where a Hardie job is won or lost, and it is one of the few areas where the manufacturer is specific. The requirements below are James Hardie's, for HardiePlank lap siding, from technical bulletin USTB 17 (Version 5, December 2019). Other Hardie products have their own instructions.
That third point is the one worth remembering when you compare quotes. There is no single correct nail spacing for every house, because spacing is set by the wind load the wall has to handle. A contractor who treats Hardie as generic siding with a standard nailing pattern is not following the manufacturer, and James Hardie's own warranty excludes damage from installation that does not comply with its published instructions.
USTB 17 also covers "pin backs," small finish nails at the bottom edge used to correct high nailing, loose planks, gaps or rattling. James Hardie is explicit that these are for appearance only: they are not a substitute for proper blind or face nailing and they do not improve wind-load resistance. If someone proposes pinning a wall as the fix for loose siding, that is treating a symptom.
Most estimates are free. But when a home shows active leaks,
soft spots, or damage that has been covered up before, a surface
look is not enough.
For those cases we offer a $350 Technical Assessment — a detailed
inspection of the wall system, flashing, and moisture paths, with
written findings you can keep.
If you move forward with the project, the $350 is credited toward your final cost. See our project gallery for examples of what we find behind old siding.
A low quote can look good until missing parts show up as leaks, cracked joints, or moisture damage behind the wall. Cheap Hardie jobs often skip flashing, use the wrong fastening pattern, or install over damaged wall sections that should've been repaired first.
That's where homeowners get hurt — the problem stays hidden until the new siding is already up. A premium product installed carelessly doesn't give premium performance.
If the home already shows leak activity, it may need siding leak repair before replacement can be completed correctly.

Homeowners call us because they want more than a basic siding crew. They want someone who understands water control, flashing, wall prep, trim transitions, and the difference between a clean-looking job and a long-lasting one.
Our team has been working in exterior remodeling for more than 20 years, and we've kept seeing the same problem: homeowners paying for work that looked fine at first but failed because the details were wrong.
That is why we focus on honest communication, direct oversight, and installation that protects the structure behind the siding, not just the face of the house.
MI Homesiding & Roofing is a Tennessee Licensed Home Improvement Contractor, insured, BBB Accredited, and a James Hardie™ ALLIANCE Affiliate. We provide bilingual English and Spanish service throughout Knoxville and surrounding East Tennessee communities.
We install James Hardie fiber cement siding across Knoxville and nearby communities facing the same humidity, rain, and moisture pressure — including
and Powell.
Working locally every day means we understand the construction styles and weather patterns that affect these homes. If you're comparing siding contractors, choose one who explains the real issue clearly. For pricing context, see our siding replacement cost guide.
What James Hardie itself warrants. James Hardie publishes a 30-year non-prorated, transferable substrate limited warranty covering its siding, trim boards and soffit, and warrants the ColorPlus factory finish separately for 15 years, covering paint and labor against peeling, cracking and chipping. Those cover the product. They are not a workmanship warranty, and James Hardie excludes damage attributable to installation that does not follow its published instructions — which is why the installation and the warranty are the same conversation.
Our workmanship warranty, in plain terms. We carry a one-year limited workmanship warranty on siding work, and five years on a full James Hardie replacement. We publish both figures rather than one blanket number, because a single figure quoted across every job is almost always the shorter one applied to the bigger job.
How long it takes. A typical full siding replacement may take about one to two weeks of working time, depending on home size, material, weather, access, hidden damage and project scope. That is an expectation rather than a guarantee, and we do not promise a fixed completion date. The schedule goes in the written proposal.
What the written estimate itemizes. Square footage by elevation, the product line and profile by name, the weather-resistive barrier, flashing at every opening and transition, trim, fasteners, caulking and finish, an allowance for sheathing repair, and removal and disposal of the existing cladding. Where two siding quotes differ sharply, the gap is nearly always in the barrier, the flashing and the sheathing allowance — the parts nobody sees once the wall is closed.
Paying for the work. Financing options may be available through a third-party financing partner, subject to approval and the provider’s terms. MI Homesiding & Roofing is not the lender, and the terms come from the provider rather than from us.

We install fiber cement siding across Knoxville and the surrounding East Tennessee communities, including Farragut, Maryville, Alcoa, Oak Ridge, Powell, Halls, Clinton, Lenoir City, Seymour and Corryton.
Yes. Fiber cement is non-combustible, and James Hardie states that it resists damage from moisture and holds no appeal for pests such as woodpeckers or termites. Those characteristics matter in East Tennessee humidity and rain, which is why many Knoxville homeowners choose it. The right material still depends on the home, the budget, and how much maintenance you want to take on.
Hardie® fiber cement siding is designed for long-term performance when properly installed and maintained. Warranty coverage varies by product and finish, so homeowners should review the current James Hardie warranty applicable to the products selected for their project.
James Hardie siding can improve curb appeal and may contribute to a home's resale appeal, especially when the exterior is professionally installed and well maintained. Actual resale value depends on the home, market, project scope, and buyer preferences.
Fiber cement siding should be periodically inspected and cleaned, with attention to caulk joints, flashing, painted surfaces, and areas exposed to moisture. Repainting requirements depend on the specific finish and product installed.
James Hardie siding cost in Knoxville depends on the size of the home, removal requirements, trim details, wall condition, access, flashing work, and the specific Hardie products selected. We provide a project-specific estimate after reviewing the actual scope of work. On a new build there is nothing to remove, which changes the math — see what new construction siding may cost.
Fiber cement offers strong durability, dimensional stability, and noncombustible material characteristics, while vinyl generally has a lower upfront cost and requires less painting. The better choice depends on the home, budget, maintenance expectations, and desired appearance.
Yes. We handle full cedar to Hardie siding conversions, including wall prep, flashing correction, and proper installation for Tennessee weather.
HardiePlank is the horizontal lap siding product, installed in overlapping courses, and it is the most common choice. HardiePanel is a large vertical sheet product. Both are fiber cement; the difference is orientation, panel size and the look they produce.
Yes, but board and batten is a look rather than a separate Hardie material. It is built by installing HardiePanel vertical siding and then adding battens over the panel joints at regular spacing, usually HardieTrim boards. The spacing of the battens is a design decision made before the panels are laid out.
ColorPlus Technology is James Hardie's factory-applied, baked-on finish, as opposed to primed product that is painted on site after installation. James Hardie warrants the ColorPlus finish separately from the board, with a 15-year limited finish warranty that it will not peel, crack or chip. It is not flat coverage for 15 years: under the current warranty the payment is reduced by 6.67% per year from the second year, and a claim requires written notice within 90 days of discovery and before any permanent repair.
Hardie is fiber cement and non-combustible. LP SmartSide is treated engineered wood made with LP's SmartGuard process for resistance to fungal decay and termites. They also differ in finishing and warranty: LP documents that all cut ends and exposed edges are primed and painted and that primed product is finished within the window set out in its current application instructions, and backs the product with a 5/50 limited warranty, while James Hardie covers its fiber cement with a 30-year limited, non-prorated warranty plus a separate 15-year ColorPlus finish warranty. Neither is the right answer for every house.
