We had him out because we needed to figure out how to fix a roof leak where the flashing wasn't done right (and part of the siding was also not right). He did a thorough inspection and explained to me what issues he saw. His quote was similar to the other we got.

We ended up having him put on a new roof, with a new under shingle ventilation system and a roof vent. He also corrected siding issues (and flashing), fixed some rotten trim, and repainted part of the siding and trim. Everything looks great! His crews were very nice.

Of all the contractors we've worked with on various renovations, Mel was easily one of the best at quickly responding when we had a question or saw an issue we wanted handled differently. We'll definitely hire him again if we need roof or siding work!

Roof Cleaning and Maintenance, Done by Material

Most roofs in East Tennessee do not fail on the open field of the roof. They fail where debris sits and keeps the surface damp — in valleys, behind chimneys, against dormer walls, and along the back edge of a roof shaded by trees. Clearing it is the cheapest work anyone will ever do on your roof.

What we do. We remove leaves and roof debris, especially through the fall and whenever a roof needs it, and we clean roof surfaces exteriorly — including metal roofing where that is appropriate, and asphalt shingle roofing by a method suited to the material and its condition.

The method is not the same on every roof. The cleaning method depends on the roofing material, its condition and the manufacturer’s guidance. Asphalt shingles require a gentler approach than metal roofing. GAF’s own technical guidance advises against power washing shingles, because the pressure can dislodge the granules — and the granule layer is what shields the asphalt beneath from ultraviolet light. A shingle roof that has been pressure washed can look clean and have had years taken off it. Pressure washing may be appropriate on certain metal or coated roof surfaces, but only where it is consistent with that system’s own requirements. We do not apply one pressure specification across every roof.

While we are up there, debris in the gutters is part of the same problem — see gutter cleaning. If a roof is already shedding granules heavily, cleaning will not restore it, and we will tell you that instead of selling the wash.
