Gutter cleaning is maintenance. It clears what has collected in the gutters, the outlets and the downspouts so water can leave the roof the way it was designed to.

That is a different job from a repair. If your gutters overflow every time it rains, or they keep clogging a few weeks after being cleared, cleaning alone is not the answer — something in the system is failing, and clearing it again will not change that. In that case you want clogged gutter repair.

If nothing is broken and the gutters are simply full, this is the page you want.

What a gutter cleaning visit includes

Hand clearing silt and grime from inside a gutter at the roof edge during a gutter cleaning in Knoxville, TN
01

Debris removal
Leaves, roof grit, shingle granules and the packed sludge at the bottom of the run come out of the gutter, not just off the top.

02

Outlets and downspouts
We clear the outlet and flush the downspout, then watch the water actually come out at the bottom. A clear gutter feeding a blocked downspout still overflows.

03

System health check
While we have access we look at the hangers, the seams, the pitch and the fascia behind the gutter, and tell you what we see.

04

Cleanup
The debris is bagged and taken away. We do not blow it onto your lawn or leave it in the beds.

Mel was so easy to work with. We had him out because we needed to figure out how to fix a roof leak where the flashing wasn't done right (and part of the siding was also not right). He did a thorough inspection and explained to me what issues he saw. His quote was similar to the other we got. We ended up having him put on a new roof, with a new under shingle ventilation system and a roof vent. He also corrected siding issues (and flashing), fixed some rotten trim, and repainted part of the siding and trim. Everything looks great! His crews were very nice. Of all the contractors we've worked with on various renovations, Mel was easily one of the best at quickly responding when we had a question or saw an issue we wanted handled differently. We'll definitely hire him again if we need roof or siding work!

Mel and his team were extremely thorough in identifying and correcting a water leakage problem from the top of our deck into the enclosed sun room below. They were both professional and courteous and provided great follow up after the job was completed. I highly recommend MI Homesiding & Roofing for any problem that involves water leakage into your home. I will definitely use MI in the future.

Highly recommend MI Homesiding! They completed a major home exterior project for us including replacing and painting our siding as well as replacing our roofing and gutters. They did an excellent job and we began getting compliments immediately from our neighbors about it! We not only recommend MI Homesiding, we will be using them again for future projects ourselves.

I found MI Homesiding & Roofing through their YouTube channel and called with a few questions about siding. Even though I’m not located in Tennessee and wouldn’t be hiring them directly, they answered the phone right away and took the time to answer every question in detail. They provided specific, helpful information and even assisted me in finding a contractor in my area. It’s rare to find a company so willing to help someone who isn’t even a local customer. Awesome people, excellent service, and truly knowledgeable. Thank you so much!

How to tell when yours need clearing

There is no single correct interval, and we are not going to publish one. A house under three mature oaks and a house on an open lot do not need the same schedule, and a calendar does not know the difference.

What actually drives it: what is overhanging the roof and how close it sits, whether the trees drop leaves or needles, the pitch of the roof, how many outlets the run has, and whether guards are already fitted.

What tells you it is time:

  • Water sheeting over the front edge during rain instead of running to the downspout
  • Staining or streaks down the outside face of the gutter
  • Plants, moss or seedlings growing in the run
  • Grit and granules washing out at the bottom of the downspout
  • Birds, wasps or rodents working around the eave
  • Nothing coming out of the downspout while it is raining

If you are not sure, we will look and tell you. If they do not need clearing yet, we will say so.

Cleaning or repair? How to tell them apart

It is cleaning when…
the gutters are full, the water goes where it should once they are cleared, and it stays that way through the next few storms.

It is repair when…
it clogs again quickly, water stands in a clean gutter, the run sags or pulls away, a seam drips, or it overflows in the middle of a run rather than at the downspout. See clogged gutter repair or sagging gutter repair.

It is the downspout when…
the gutter is clear but nothing comes out at the bottom, or water surfaces at the foundation. See downspout repair and downspout drainage.

We check all of this while we are on the ladder. If clearing the gutters is genuinely all you need, that is what we will tell you.

Can guards reduce how often this is needed?

They can reduce how much debris gets into the gutter, and on the right house that means clearing it less often. They do not end maintenance, and they do not fix a run that sags, drains the wrong way or has a blocked outlet.

Whether they are worth it on your house depends on what is overhead and what condition the gutters are in now. We will give you a straight answer rather than a sales pitch — see gutter guard installation.

What a full gutter does if it is left

A gutter that cannot drain stops protecting the house and starts loading it. Water goes over the front edge and lands against the wall and the foundation instead of being carried away. Water that backs up behind the gutter sits against the fascia, which is wood, and wood that stays wet eventually rots.

The weight matters too. Wet debris is heavy, and a full run pulls on its hangers until the gutter sags or separates — which is a repair rather than a cleaning. Standing water in a gutter is also where mosquitoes breed.

None of this happens after one missed cleaning. It happens when a gutter is left full for seasons at a time.

What a cleaning costs

We quote gutter cleaning after we have seen the house, because the things that drive the price are things you cannot judge from a phone call: how many linear feet of gutter there are, how many stories and how reachable the run is, how much is in there and how long it has been building, whether guards have to come off and go back on, and the condition of the gutters themselves.

We would rather give you a real number than a headline price that changes once we arrive. If you are pricing gutter work more broadly — repair, replacement or new installation — the rates are set out on the gutter cost page.

If we find something behind the gutter

Cleaning gives us a close look at parts of the house you cannot see from the ground.

If rotted fascia, soft soffit or water damage behind the gutter line turns up while we are up there, we stop, document it with photos, and explain what we found and why it matters. Any work beyond the cleaning you agreed to gets a written Change Order first.

Finding it is not the same as selling it. Plenty of the time the answer is that it can wait, and we will say so.

You will see what we see.

Photos of anything we find, an explanation in plain language, and a written Change Order before any additional work begins.

Gutter cleaning questions

How do I know when my gutters need cleaning?

Watch what happens in the rain. If water sheets over the front edge instead of running to the downspout, if nothing comes out of the bottom of the downspout while it is raining, or if you can see staining down the outside face, plants growing in the run, or grit washing out at the bottom, it is time. There is no universal interval that fits every house.

Is gutter cleaning the same as clogged gutter repair?

No. Cleaning is maintenance: the gutters are full and clearing them fixes it. Repair is for a system that is failing — it clogs again within weeks, water stands in a clean gutter, the run sags, or it overflows in the middle rather than at the downspout. Clearing a failing gutter buys you a few weeks, not a fix.

How much does gutter cleaning cost?

We quote it after seeing the house. The price depends on how many linear feet of gutter there are, how many stories and how reachable the run is, how much debris has built up, whether guards have to be removed and refitted, and the condition of the gutters. We would rather give you a real number than a headline price that changes when we arrive.

Do you clean gutters that already have guards on them?

Yes, though it takes longer. Most guards have to be unfastened, set aside and refitted afterwards, and that work is part of the job. Guards reduce how much gets in, but debris still collects on top of them and fine material still works through.

Do you clear the downspouts as well?

Yes. Clearing the gutter and leaving a blocked outlet or downspout would not fix anything — the water still has nowhere to go. We clear the outlet, flush the downspout, and confirm water is actually coming out at the bottom before we call it done.

What happens to the debris?

It is bagged and taken away. We do not blow it onto the lawn, into the planting beds or off the back of the roof.

Will you tell me if something is actually broken up there?

Yes, and we will tell you if nothing is. Cleaning puts us right next to the hangers, the seams, the pitch and the fascia, so we will show you what we found with photos. If it can wait, we will say it can wait.

Ready to get them cleared?

Tell us what you are seeing and we will take a look. Free estimates for standard work, a licensed and insured crew, and a straight answer about whether you need a cleaning or a repair.
