Bad Roof Installation Repair in Knoxville, TN

20+Years Experience
40 miService Radius
LicensedGeneral Contractor
FamilyOwned & Operated

Your roof is only a few years old and it’s already leaking. Shingles came off in a storm that shouldn’t have moved them. The same spot has been patched twice and the stain on the ceiling keeps coming back.

When a roof fails this early, installation is often one of the first places to look — flashing left out, nails driven above the line, missing underlayment, or shingles cut short at the edge. In many cases, the weather simply exposes a weak spot that was already there.

The fix is not another patch. It starts with finding what went wrong, documenting it, and correcting it to manufacturer standards. That’s how we approach roofing work across Knoxville — Licensed GC · BBB Accredited · GAF Certified Residential Roofing Contractor · since 2004.

I found MI Homesiding & Roofing through their YouTube channel and called with a few questions about siding. Even though I’m not located in Tennessee and wouldn’t be hiring them directly, they answered the phone right away and took the time to answer every question in detail. They provided specific, helpful information and even assisted me in finding a contractor in my area. It’s rare to find a company so willing to help someone who isn’t even a local customer. Awesome people, excellent service, and truly knowledgeable. Thank you so much!

We are very happy with MI Homesiding's workmanship and dedication to achieve the best results for our Hardyboard residing. Mel answered our calls promptly; addressing and tending to any question we had. As with any home renovation, we ran into minor issues when we removed the siding the flashing was old and damaged. MI siding was more than happy to give us a fair estimate and replace the flashing to the siding. Porta-potty & dumpster were dropped off immediately prior to process, and removed with equal precision. Workers were diligent maintaining a safe & clean work area; cleaning remnant debris on last day. We recommended MI to our neighbors, and are having them back to caulk & paint. They did an excellent job at a fair price.

How to Know Your Roof Was Installed Wrong

A correctly installed roof does not leak within the first few years. It does not lose shingles in normal wind events. It does not need the same area repaired twice.

If your roof is less than ten years old and already having problems — installation is often the cause. See also roof leak detection and repair in Knoxville.

Common Installation Errors We Find in Knoxville

High-nailed shingles - Nails driven above the manufacturer nailing zone can reduce shingle holding strength and lead to loose or blown-off shingles. See our shingle repair service.

Missing or incorrect flashing - Roof-to-wall transitions, chimneys, valleys, and penetrations need properly installed flashing to keep water out. See our roof flashing repair service.

Missing underlayment - Skipping or improperly installing underlayment leaves the roof deck with less protection beneath the shingles.

Incorrect shingle layout - Shingles installed with poor alignment, short cuts, or improper exposure can create weak points and premature failures.

Improper edge installation - Missing starter shingles, incorrect overhang, or poor drip-edge details can allow wind and water to affect the roof edge.

How We Diagnose Bad Roof Installation

We inspect the installation details that commonly cause premature roof failure:

If we find signs of improper installation, we document the problem and explain what needs to be corrected. For a full roof evaluation, see our roof inspection services in Knoxville.

Why Insurance Claims Get Denied After Bad Installation

Improper roof installation and storm damage are not the same problem. Insurance may cover damage caused by wind or hail, but installation defects can complicate a claim.

Common installation issues include:

We document installation problems separately from storm damage so the cause is clear. See our storm damage roof repair service.

Bad Installation vs Normal Wear

Bad installation usually shows problems early. Normal roof wear develops gradually over many years.

Signs of bad installation:

Normal wear:

If you are unsure whether the problem is age or installation, see how long a roof lasts in Tennessee

  • Leaks within the first few years
  • Shingles blowing off too soon
  • Repeated repairs in the same area
  • Missing flashing or underlayment
  • Incorrect nailing or shingle layout
  • Gradual granule loss
  • Aging seal strips
  • Slow flashing deterioration
  • Wear that develops over time

Frequently Asked Questions – 🔻 FAQs

What does a bad roofing job look like?

A bad roofing job may show high-nailed shingles, missing flashing, uneven shingle lines, exposed fasteners, poor roof-edge details, or leaks that appear much earlier than expected.

How can I tell if my roof was installed correctly?

A proper installation should have consistent shingle alignment, correct fastening, flashing at transitions, underlayment, starter shingles, drip edge, and properly finished valleys and penetrations. If you are unsure, a professional roof inspection can help identify installation problems.

What should I do if my roof was installed wrong?

Document the problems with photos, keep your contract and warranty paperwork, and have the roof inspected before more repairs are made. We can identify and document installation problems during a roof inspection.

What should I do when a roofer does a bad job?

Start by documenting the problem and contacting the original contractor in writing. If the issue continues, get an independent roof inspection to determine whether the problem is workmanship, storm damage, or normal wear.

Can bad roof installation cause leaks?

Yes. Missing flashing, incorrect nailing, poorly installed underlayment, valley errors, and roof-edge problems can allow water into the roofing system. For an active leak, see our roof leak detection and repair service.
