Missing or wrong underlayment — no synthetic underlayment means the decking has no secondary protection when shingles fail.
Shingles cut too short at the eave — water does not reach the gutters and wicks back under the shingles into the fascia and soffit.
Wrong nail count — three nails instead of four per shingle. Manufacturer requires four. Insurance claims get denied because of this.
No ice and water shield at valleys and eaves — in East Tennessee this is required. Skipping it means the first heavy rain or ice event causes decking damage.
When hail or wind damages a roof that was already improperly installed, insurance carriers inspect the installation — not just the storm. If nails are in the wrong position, if flashing is missing, if the manufacturer’s installation requirements were not followed — the claim may be denied.

Normal wear takes 20 to 30 years on asphalt shingles. Shingles granulate slowly, seals soften, and flashing oxidizes over time.
Bad installation shows up within months to a few years — leaks after the first heavy rain, shingles after the first wind event, ceiling stains that appear before the roof is even paid off.

Step 2 — Written findings: every installation error documented with photos.
Step 3 — Removal of incorrect work: bad flashing, high-nailed sections, improperly cut edges.
Step 4 — Correct reinstallation: GAF manufacturer standards for fastening, sealing, and flashing.
Step 5 — Final inspection and documentation of all corrections made.
