How Much Intake and Exhaust an Attic Actually Needs
“Balanced” has a number behind it. The code works from net free ventilating area — the clear opening left after a vent’s screen and louvers take their share, which is always less than the hole it covers.
Section R806.2 of the 2018 International Residential Code, adopted by both Knox County and the City of Knoxville, sets the baseline at 1 square foot of net free area for every 150 square feet of attic floor, relaxing to 1 in 300 when venting is balanced with 40–50% of the area high and the rest low at the eaves. On a 1,600 square foot attic that is roughly 768 square inches balanced, against about 1,536 when there is no usable intake.
Intake is the half that gets missed. Soffits painted shut, screened over or buried under drifted insulation leave a ridge vent pulling air out of the house through ceiling gaps instead of in through the eaves.
