What Is Aluminum Window Wrap?
Aluminum window wrap, also known as window capping, is a protective aluminum covering installed over the exterior wood trim of a window.
It gives the wood underneath a durable, weather-resistant outer surface, so prepared trim is no longer directly exposed to sun and rain.

What Aluminum Wrap Actually Is
Aluminum trim wrap — also called capping — starts as a flat coil of pre-finished aluminum. On site it is measured to the window, cut, and bent on a brake: a long bench tool that folds sheet metal along a straight line. The folded pieces are then fitted over the existing exterior wood trim and fastened, so the wood is covered by a formed metal skin that follows its shape.
That is the whole idea. It is a cladding over trim, made to fit your specific openings. It is not a product that comes in a box, and it is not a coating or a paint.
Brickmould and casing
The trim that frames the opening on the outside — the most commonly wrapped part.
The sill and its apron
The horizontal surfaces at the bottom, which take the most weather and usually fail first.
Jamb returns and stops
The narrower faces running back toward the window, where the detail and the bend count get complicated.
Because every piece is formed for the opening it goes on, the quality of the result comes down to measuring, the number of bends, and how the corners and transitions are handled. Two wrap jobs on the same house can look very different.
What Wrap Does, and What It Does Not Do
This is worth being blunt about, because wrap is often sold as more than it is.
What it does
- Covers properly prepared exterior trim so the wood is not directly exposed to sun and rain.
- Removes the painting cycle on the surfaces it covers.
- Gives the opening a clean, consistent finished appearance.
- Lets the trim detail be tidied up as part of a siding or exterior project.
What it does not do
- It does not make the opening waterproof.
- It does not repair, stop or reverse rot that is already in the wood.
- It does not replace flashing or the weather barrier behind the cladding.
- It does not fix a window that is failing, or a leak coming from somewhere else.
- It is not maintenance-free. The metal and its joints still need looking at.
Wrap is a finish and protection layer on the trim. Water management at the opening is a different system, and it sits behind the cladding where the wrap never reaches.

Wrap Does Not Fix Rot

Aluminum covers wood. It does not dry it, treat it or strengthen it. Wrapping over soft, wet or rotted trim does not stop the rot — it hides it, and it can keep moisture against the wood that would otherwise have had a chance to dry. The outside looks finished and new while the wood underneath keeps going. By the time it shows again, the damage has usually reached further than the trim.

Wrap Is Not Flashing
These two get confused constantly, and the confusion is expensive, so it is worth separating them clearly.
Aluminum trim wrap
Sits on the outside, over the trim, where you can see it. Its job is to protect prepared wood from direct weather and to finish the opening.
It is a finish component.
Flashing and the weather barrier
Sit behind the cladding, where you cannot see them. Their job is to catch water that gets past the siding and route it back out of the wall.
They are the water management system.
A beautifully wrapped window on an opening with missing head flashing will still leak, and the wrap will make the leak harder to find. Conversely, correct flashing on bare weathered trim will keep the wall dry while the trim keeps needing paint. They solve different problems.

Where Sealant Fits
Sealant has a real place in a wrap job. Formed aluminum meets other materials at the window frame, at the siding, and at the corners of the trim, and some of those joints are meant to be closed.
What sealant is not is the plan. It works by adhesion, and adhesion ages, shrinks and eventually lets go. A wrap detail that depends on a bead of sealant to stay dry has a service life rather than a design, and it will come back. The overlapping layers behind the cladding are what handle water; sealant closes the joints between finished surfaces.
Put simply: sealant is used at appropriate joints and transitions in a wrap installation, and it is not the drainage strategy for the opening.

What Capping Covers, and What It Carries
Aluminum capping is a weather detail as much as a finish. Wrapped over trim that is already failing, it hides the problem instead of solving it.
What the work follows. Window flashing is detailed shingle-fashion so water that reaches the opening is directed back out onto the weather-resistive barrier rather than into the wall: sill first, then jambs, then head. We work to the window manufacturer’s own installation instructions alongside AAMA 711 for flashing tape and ASTM E2112 for installation method, under the 2018 International Residential Code adopted by Knox County and the City of Knoxville.
What the written estimate itemizes. The number of openings and their sizes, the window line and series by name, the installation method for each opening — insert, full-frame or new-construction — flashing and weather barrier at every opening, interior and exterior finish, removal and disposal of the old units, and an allowance for what is found once the opening is bare. Where two window quotes differ sharply, the gap is almost always in the method and the flashing rather than in the glass.
Two warranties, kept separate. The manufacturer warrants the window; we warrant the installation. What is aluminum window wrap?
It is a formed aluminum cladding fitted over the exterior wood trim of a window. Flat pre-finished aluminum coil is measured, cut and bent on site to follow the shape of your trim, then fastened over it. It is made to fit the specific opening rather than bought as a finished part.
What is window capping?
Capping is another name for the same work: covering exterior wood trim with formed aluminum to protect prepared wood from direct weather and to give the opening a finished appearance.
Can you wrap over rotten wood?
No, and we do not. Aluminum covers wood; it does not dry it, treat it or strengthen it. Wrapping over soft or rotted trim hides the damage and can hold moisture against it, so the rot continues out of sight. Damaged wood is inspected and repaired or replaced before anything covers it.
Does aluminum wrap prevent wood rot?

Is aluminum window wrap lower-maintenance?
It removes the painting cycle on the surfaces it covers, which is usually the reason homeowners ask for it. It is not maintenance-free: the metal can be dented, joints and sealant at the transitions age, and the detail still needs looking at from time to time.
Can aluminum wrap fix drafty windows?
It can help where the draft is coming through gaps at the exterior trim, because closing and covering those joints is part of the work. It will not fix a draft coming from the window unit itself, from failed weatherstripping or from a poorly set window. Worth diagnosing before assuming wrap is the answer.
Can aluminum wrap be repaired?
Often yes. Aluminum can be dented by impact, and a damaged section can usually be removed and re-formed or replaced without redoing every opening on the house. Matching an older finish exactly is the usual limitation.
Does siding need to come off to wrap windows?
Sometimes. Where the wrap simply covers existing trim, often not.
