- Riser height is not more than 7¾ inches, and within a single flight the tallest riser may not exceed the shortest by more than ⅜ inch (R311.7.5.1). That tolerance is why a flight built to the ground rather than measured tends to fail.
- Tread depth is not less than 10 inches (R311.7.5.2).
- Winders carry a minimum tread depth of 10 inches measured 12 inches from the narrowest point (R311.7.4).
- All stairs have graspable handrails (R311.7.8.5), held not less than 1½ inches clear of an adjacent wall (R311.7.8.3) and projecting not more than 4½ inches into the stairway (R311.7.8.2).

Deck area and shape, the framing — joist size and spacing, beam and post sizing — footings and their depth, how the deck attaches to the house and how that connection is flashed, the decking product and its fastening method, railings and stairs, the permit, and an allowance for structural repair found once the surface is off. Where two deck quotes differ sharply, the gap is almost always in the framing, the footings and the ledger connection — the parts nobody sees once the boards go down.

Most deck repairs run about one to two working days, depending on the size of the repair, access, weather, what we find once boards come up, any change orders and material availability. Larger structural scopes take longer, and we tell you when we find them rather than afterwards.
