In an open valley the hail that marks a roof also hits the walls, and on a wall you can actually see it.

Cracked panels, dimpling and impact marks in vinyl, and on the elevations facing the prevailing wind, laps that have been pushed open. Unlike a roof, siding damage is visible from the driveway — which is exactly why it gets patched and forgotten instead of documented.

The other half is what the impact did that you cannot see. A panel that has been driven back against the wall can break the seal at a joint or tear the house wrap behind it, and from that point water gets in every time it rains sideways.

The housing runs from Pine View in the 1960s through Holston View Farm in 2023. This page is part of our New Market exterior services; for the roof see our New Market roofing page.

Mel and his team were extremely thorough in identifying and correcting a water leakage problem from the top of our deck into the enclosed sun room below. They were both professional and courteous and provided great follow up after the job was completed. I highly recommend MI Homesiding & Roofing for any problem that involves water leakage into your home. I will definitely use MI in the future.

I found MI Homesiding & Roofing through their YouTube channel and called with a few questions about siding. Even though I’m not located in Tennessee and wouldn’t be hiring them directly, they answered the phone right away and took the time to answer every question in detail. They provided specific, helpful information and even assisted me in finding a contractor in my area. It’s rare to find a company so willing to help someone who isn’t even a local customer. Awesome people, excellent service, and truly knowledgeable. Thank you so much!

We are very happy with MI Homesiding's workmanship and dedication to achieve the best results for our Hardyboard residing. Mel answered our calls promptly; addressing and tending to any question we had. As with any home renovation, we ran into minor issues when we removed the siding the flashing was old and damaged. MI siding was more than happy to give us a fair estimate and replace the flashing to the siding. Porta-potty & dumpster were dropped off immediately prior to process, and removed with equal precision. Workers were diligent maintaining a safe & clean work area; cleaning remnant debris on last day. We recommended MI to our neighbors, and are having them back to caulk & paint. They did an excellent job at a fair price.

NEW MARKET AND THE HOLSTON VALLEY

New Market Neighborhoods We Serve

What an exterior needs here tracks the decade the house was built, and the exposure is the same on every one of these lots.

Pine View

Mid-to-late 1960s, with homes on record from 1966 through 1970.

Original cladding at fifty-plus years is a replacement conversation. Housing that age was generally built without a drainage plane behind the siding, so the sheathing is what has been taking the weather.

Evelyn Peck Manley Estate

Early 1990s construction, with homes on record from 1991.

Thirty years of sun and hail on an open lot. Vinyl from that era gets brittle, and a brittle panel does not dent when it is struck — it cracks, usually low on the wall where nobody is looking.

Berry Ridge Phase IV

Early 2000s, with homes on record from 2003.

The cladding may have life left but the sealants around it do not. Caulk joints at trim, windows and transitions are on their second decade, and that is where water starts finding a way behind the panel and turning into water behind siding.

Turner Farm Estates

Mid-2000s, with homes on record from 2005.

Worth checking the windward elevation after any significant storm. Impact marks and opened laps are visible from the ground on a wall, unlike on a roof, and documenting them early is what keeps the option of a claim open.

River Mist

Homes on record from 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2020, 2022 and 2024.

A decade of continuous building means a decade of different wall assemblies on the same streets. House wrap practice and flashing details changed across that span, so condition should never be assumed from the neighborhood name.

Holston View Farm

New construction, with homes on record from 2023.

The cladding has decades left. What is worth verifying is the wall behind it: house wrap lapped in the right direction, flashing over window and door heads, and the transitions where siding meets a change in plane. Our guide to the best siding for the Tennessee climate covers what holds up on an exposed lot.

We also work throughout Four Points, Friends Station, Pleasant Grove, Willardtown, Dumplin Mill, Rocky Valley and the rest of the valley.
SIDING REPLACEMENT COST IN NEW MARKET, TN

Real numbers, published.

Most contractors will not put pricing on a page. We will. These ranges are priced by wall area, because that is what actually drives the number.

Wall AreaVinylEngineered WoodJames Hardie
1,500 sq ft$11,000 – $14,000$15,000 – $19,000$19,000 – $23,000
2,000 sq ft$15,000 – $18,000$20,000 – $25,000$25,000 – $30,000
2,500 sq ft$18,000 – $22,000$25,000 – $31,000$31,000 – $37,000
Wall area is not house square footage. A 2,000 square foot home usually has between 1,800 and 2,400 square feet of exterior wall, depending on stories and shape.

If hail is involved, what the claim covers depends on documentation more than on the estimate. If a quote comes in far below these ranges, ask what is being left out — house wrap, flashing, trim, or the rot underneath.
$350
Technical Assessment

On-site estimates are free for standard projects. For complex inspections — active leaks, previous repair work, or conditions we cannot verify from the ground — we charge $350, credited back in full if you move forward.

We ask 33% at signing to cover materials. The rest is tied to progress on the job. Never half up front.

WHAT MAKES A NEW MARKET EXTERIOR DIFFERENT

Built for New Market Exteriors

On an open valley lot the walls take the same storm the roof does, without anything in the way.

Hail marks siding in ways that are easy to see and easy to dismiss: dimpling across a panel, a cracked butt end, a lap that has been pushed open a few millimetres and never went back. Vinyl that has been on the wall twenty years is brittle enough to crack rather than dent, and the cracks tend to run low on the wall where nobody looks.

What matters more is the part behind it. An impact hard enough to move a panel can break the seal at a joint or tear the house wrap, and from then on every sideways rain puts water into the wall cavity instead of down the face of it.

On New Market homes we inspect the windward elevations after a storm and document what we find by wall, because on a wall the evidence is visible and it is worth having on record.

THE SHORTCUT THAT COSTS THE MOST

Why Cheap Siding Work Fails in New Market

The shortcut here is swapping the cracked panels and calling it done.

It is the same mistake as tearing off a hail-damaged roof before anyone photographs it. The replacement panels hide the evidence, the rest of the wall keeps the damage nobody wrote down, and the claim that would have paid for the elevation is gone.

It also leaves the real problem in place. If the impact broke a seal or tore the wrap behind the panel, a new panel over the same wall is a cosmetic fix on top of an active leak path.

We document the affected walls before we touch them, and we open up what needs opening rather than covering it.

Hidden Damage Policy

If structural rot, hidden water damage, or compromised framing is discovered during the project, we stop and document the problem with photos. We explain what we found and why it matters, then provide a written Change Order before moving forward.

We never cover hidden damage with new siding.

MATERIALS

Which Siding Fits a New Market Home

James Hardie fiber cement

50+ years, best fire and pest resistance, holds up to East Tennessee humidity better than anything else we install. Highest cost up front and the strongest return at resale.

LP SmartSide engineered wood

20 to 30 years, lighter to work with, easier on framing that is already stressed. Real wood texture at a lower cost than fiber cement.

Vinyl

Lowest cost and lowest maintenance, 20 to 30 years. The trade-off is impact resistance and resale value. If you go vinyl, the wall prep underneath matters more, not less, because vinyl hides problems well.

We install all three. On an exposed valley lot impact resistance carries more weight than it would in a wooded subdivision: fiber cement takes a hail strike better than aged vinyl, and if you go vinyl the wall prep underneath matters more, not less, because vinyl hides what happened behind it.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Siding in New Market, TN — Common Questions

How much does siding replacement cost in New Market, TN?

By wall area. Vinyl runs $11,000 to $22,000, engineered wood $15,000 to $31,000, and James Hardie $19,000 to $37,000, depending on the size of the house. The full breakdown is above.

Can hail really damage siding, or just the roof?

Both, and on a wall you can usually see it: dimpling, cracked butt ends, and laps pushed open on the windward elevation. Vinyl that has been up twenty years is brittle enough to crack instead of dent.

Some panels are cracked. Can you just replace those?

We can, but not before the wall is documented. Swapping panels first removes the evidence of the event and closes the option of a claim, and it leaves any broken seal or torn house wrap behind the panel exactly where it was.

Does hail damage to siding go through insurance?

It can, and it depends almost entirely on documentation: which walls, what marks, and when the event happened. We photograph by elevation and provide the written scope.

Hardie or LP SmartSide — which should I choose?

We install both. On an exposed valley lot James Hardie takes an impact better than engineered wood or aged vinyl. LP SmartSide is lighter and easier on framing that is already stressed, and it costs less than fiber cement.

Should I pay 50% upfront?

No. We ask 33% at signing to cover materials, and the rest is tied to progress on the job.
